The Spoken Word

Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.

  1. 1886·Moses Thatcher·Apostle
God grant that we may soon regain and forever maintain our liberty. But may it not come as long as we have an adulterer, a fornicator, or whoremaster who professes to be a Latter-day Saint. As long as such as these partake of the Holy Sacrament with this people, let bondage continue. But let us purge out these things, let us be pure and holy before God, cherishing the principles of justice in our hearts, and the day of liberty will surely come, which may God grant, is my prayer. Amen.

  2. 1951·Joseph Fielding Smith·Apostle
Brethren and sisters, we who have covenanted in the waters of baptism and at the sacrament table to keep God's commandments are in honor bound to be true to these obligations. I pray that with the Lord's help we may always have the desire, the strength and the courage to be true to our faith. This I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  3. 1970·LeGrand Richards·Apostle
Brother LeGrand Richards has now spoken to us. I can say as did King Agrippa: "Thou almost persuadeth all of us, LeGrand." How proud we are of all the brethren as we listen to their marvelous testimonies and the preaching of the gospel. You leaders of Zion, will you tell your speakers in sacrament meetings to exemplify what you have heard here: Preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Let's confine our teachings to the truth of the gospel, and this kingdom will roll on as Brother Richards has prayed it will, and the Lord has promised.
Elder Legrand Richards — April 1970 General Conference [address 2 of 2] [derivation] — conference_report
  4. 1984·L. Tom Perry·Apostle
But because of human weakness, we make mistakes even after baptism. The Lord has, therefore, provided a way for us to renew our baptismal covenants through partaking of the sacrament each week. When we partake of the sacred emblems reverently and worthily, we witness again that we will take the name of Christ upon us, that we do always remember Him, that we will keep His commandments. It is a time to remember Christ’s atonement, His love, Gethsemane, Calvary, and the empty tomb.

  5. 1985·Dallin H. Oaks·Apostle
When the priest offers the scriptural prayer on the bread at the sacrament table, he prays that all who partake may “witness” unto God, the Eternal Father, “that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son.” ( D&C 20:77 ; Moro. 4:3 .) This witness has several different meanings.

  6. 1999·M. Russell Ballard·Apostle
My brothers and sisters, may God bless every one of us that the fire of our covenants may burn in our hearts like a flame unquenchable. May we be prepared spiritually to renew our sacred covenants each week as we partake of the sacrament. That we will honor the Lord and we will be anxious to do our part in these most exciting and great days, to build up His Church by strengthening our families is my humble prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
