The Spoken Word
Passages drawn from the sermons and published works that carry this theme forward.
1857·Lorenzo Snow·Apostle
We have got to be one, and to make ourselves worthy to receive the same Holy Spirit, and to receive it alike one with another. Jesus prayed o His Father that those He had given Him out of the world might be one, as He and the Father were one, and says he, I pray that thou wilt give them the same love which thou hast for me, that I may be in them, and thou in me, that all may be one. There is something very important in this, and we have got to practise ourselves until we become like the Father and the Son, one in all things.

1943·Joseph F. Merrill·Apostle
Yes, brethren, we do know that we should love one another, we do know that we should teach the two great commandments by example as well as by precept, and we cannot effectively teach the second great commandment unless we live the Golden Rule. We must do unto others as we would have others do unto us. And a test of whether we are doing it or not, is just to imagine that we are in the other fellow's shoes and he is in ours. When we are in his shoes, how would we like to be treated ?

1958·Stephen L Richards·Apostle
You husbands of the priesthood who have been neglectful of your covenants, I plead with you, in behalf of sorrowing wives and families, to relieve the pain you are causing those who love you, to regain manhood and strength and be worthy to assume in righteousness the leadership of your families. They want to respect you. They will if you will let them.
President Stephen L Richards — April 1958 General Conference [address 5 of 6] [derivation] — conference_report
1976·N. Eldon Tanner·Apostle
President Kimball, in his sweet and loving manner, expressed greetings and pronounced the blessings of the Lord upon the people. He urged them to keep the commandments, to live honest and upright lives and be an example to the world.

That is true. But before you make a decision against a mission, count your blessings, my dear friend. Think of all the great and marvelous things you have—your very life, your health, your parents, your home, the girl you love. Are they not all gifts from a generous Heavenly Father? Did you really earn them alone, independent of His blessing? No, the lives of all of us are in His hands. All of the precious things that are ours come from Him who is the giver of every good gift.

1995·Gordon B. Hinckley·Prophet
I repeat, this, my brethren and sisters, is the work of the Almighty. He lives, our Father and our friend. It is the work of our Redeemer, who out of a love beyond comprehension gave His life for each of us. It is a divine work restored through a chosen prophet. It is a work to which we dedicate our lives as we invoke choice blessings upon you, our beloved associates, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
